Why did you choose this specific assessment tool?
I wanted to choose a tool that I did not see represented in the class resources for this module, had a good interface, and was engaging from a learner perspective. Gibbly fit these criteria.Â
How does your assessment align with the learning objectives?
I chose to make an ELA focused assessment that was in line with one of my favorite subjects: poetry explication. Gibbly seemed very handy for this purpose, since it allows you to plug in an entire poem to be reviewed by its integrated AI before relevant questions are generated. Unfortunately, there is a character limit that prevented me from including the entire, rather long, poem I chose. This meant that many of the questions were not correct, as it was based on limited information. For instance, the AI generated a question that asked about natural themes and listed four elements with three correct answers. Upon review, I realized that all four answers were actually correct but the fourth element was not present in the snippet I included for the AI to review. Because of this, and the low quality of most of the questions, I had to go through and edit or start from scratch for nearly every question in order to align them with my objective of reviewing the text and its themes.
How did you ensure the feedback provided is meaningful for learners?
The feedback was entirely manual - there is no AI enhanced feedback that I could identify in Gibbly. When a user selects an answer, a text box comes up that gives the correct answer and a brief explanation. This seems to be the same whether the user responds correctly or not. It is important to understand this when creating this feedback to ensure it is useful for students in either case.
How might you use this tool or assessment in your professional practice?
This tool would be handy for assessing young students or adults summatively or formatively. It is engaging, easy to use, and provides immediate feedback. This tool is only really appropriate in settings where students have access to technology like chromebooks or phones. One very handy feature is the reporting after a quiz has been completed by a user or class. It shows correct answers by student, a leaderboard, average scores, grade summaries, and identifies the most challenging questions. This data would be invaluable for evaluating the effectiveness of an assessment and areas in which students may need additional support.
